Balancing Inclusion and Exclusivity
How to create safe but diverse community spaces

In today’s digital age, online communities have become powerful platforms for connection, collaboration, and belonging.
However, it is crucial to strike a balance between inclusion and exclusivity within these communities.
By understanding the concepts of bridging and bonding social capital, we can guide ourselves in promoting diversity and creating safe spaces for all members.
Let’s explore these concepts in more detail and provide actionable recommendations to help you foster inclusivity in your online community.
Bridging and Bonding
Robert D. Putnam’s concept of bridging and bonding social capital provides valuable insights into community dynamics.
According to Putnam, bonding is the process of connecting similar individuals, reinforcing exclusive identities and homogenous groups. Bonding networks are most useful when specific reciprocity and mobilizing solidarity is necessary for “getting by” in oppressive situations.
On the other hand, bridging brings together diverse individuals across various social cleavages, promoting inclusivity and the exchange of ideas. Bridging networks are good for linking to external assets and for information diffusion for the purpose of “getting ahead” of the status quo.
As Putnam put it, “bonding social capital constitutes a kind of sociological superglue, whereas bridging social capital provides a sociological WD-40”
Recognising Unintentional Bonding
However, when communities are formed based on existing connections or shared interests, unintentional bonding can occur.
This unintentional bonding may lead to homogeneity within the community, limiting diverse perspectives and experiences.
As community professionals, it is essential to be aware of these dimensions over which members may bond unintentionally.
By recognizing these dimensions and taking proactive steps to diversify the community, we can create a more inclusive environment.
Here are some steps we can take as community leaders to promote Diversity and Inclusivity:
1. Define and Communicate Values:
Clearly articulate your community’s commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and openness. Establish guidelines or a code of conduct that emphasizes respectful dialogue and discourages exclusionary behaviour. Make it known that your community welcomes individuals from all backgrounds and perspectives. By communicating these values, we can create a more welcoming and inclusive community.
2. Foster a Culture of Respect and Understanding:
Encourage community members to engage in respectful discussions and actively listen to different viewpoints. Create a safe environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and ideas. Promote empathy and understanding by valuing diverse perspectives. By fostering a culture of respect and understanding, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming community.
3. Create Bridging Opportunities:
Design activities and initiatives that promote bridging social capital within your community. Host events, workshops, or discussions that invite individuals from diverse backgrounds to share their assets, ideas, skills, and information. Encourage collaboration and knowledge exchange across social cleavages to foster a more inclusive environment. By creating bridging opportunities, we can bring together diverse individuals and promote inclusivity within the community.
4. Celebrate Diversity:
Highlight and celebrate the diversity within your community. Showcase the contributions of individuals from different backgrounds, experiences, and cultures. Encourage community members to share their stories and traditions, creating a sense of appreciation and respect for diverse identities. By celebrating diversity, we can create a more inclusive and supportive community.
5. Regularly Assess and Adapt:
Continuously revisit and reassess the composition of your community. Pay attention to unintentional bonding and take proactive steps to diversify the community. Seek feedback from members and adapt your strategies accordingly. Keep an open mind and be willing to make necessary adjustments to ensure inclusivity remains a priority. By regularly assessing and adapting, we can ensure that our community remains diverse and inclusive over time.
Creating an inclusive online community is a challenging but rewarding task. By fostering a culture of respect, promoting bridging activities, celebrating diversity, and regularly reassessing your community’s composition, you can successfully navigate the challenges of balancing inclusion and exclusion. As community professionals, it is our responsibility to cultivate spaces where everyone feels welcome, valued, and heard.
Together, let’s build online communities that embrace diversity and promote meaningful connections for all.
Socially.
